The Labour Market Statistics of the Census yields attributes about the economical activity of the Austrian population. For example, it allows for the systematic monitoring of the development of the number of persons employed and unemployed in Austria. The activity status is the central attribute here – it categorises the population in important social groups like employed/unemployed, pupils, students, as well as people receiving a pension.
The Register Based Labour Market Statistics is a register-based survey on economic characteristics of the Austrian resident population as per 31st October, the annual reference day of the "Mini" Register-Based Census, and has been produced since 2008. The characteristics and definitions are based on the EU regulation on population and housing censuses, and includes the attributes activity status, status in employment, occupation and economic activity (ÖNACE) of the local unit.
Further attributes covered by the Labour Market Statistics are information about full-time/part-time employment, temporary absence of work, marginal employment, as well as a more precise classification of employed persons into white collar workers, blue collar workers, and civil servants.
About 30 different administrative and statistic data sources are linked to obtain the attributes mentioned above. One of the most important sources is the Central Social Security Register, which includes the better part of all economically active persons and those who are receiving a pension. Other data sources used include the Unemployment Register, statistics about education, the Business Register of Enterprises and their Local Units and the Agricultural and Forestry Register.
