Demographic analyses provide information about the demographical structure (age, sex, marital status, nationality) of the population. Those so-called demographic characteristics are not only of interest for general population analyses – for example the general age distribution – but are also used for analyses of the social and economical structure of the population (labour participation grouped by sex, age, etc.).
Therefore, the following attributes have to be collected and published as core variables for the register-based census, according to the Register-based Census Act and the Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council: age (on the reference date, calculated from the date of birth), sex, legal marital status, nationality, country of birth, main residence one year before the census (i.e. 31 October 2010), as well we the year of arrival in Austria (if the main residence has been in a foreign country).
Those attributes have to be collected from administrative data. The Central Population Register represents the base register for the demographic attributes. For quality assurance, the data has to be cross checked with comparison data for completeness and consistency. The corresponding sources for this task are: the Central Social Security Register, Unemployment Register, Child Allowance Register, Register of Public Servants of the Federation and the Federal States, Register of Social Welfare Recipients, Tax Register, Register of Car Owners and the Central Foreigner Register.
