In 2011 the total number of registrations of new vehicles
(without trailers) amounted to 457 485 which meant an increase of 7.9%
compared to 2010. The number of new passenger cars increased by 8.4%
to 356 145 vehicles (2010: 328 563 units), the highest value ever reported.
For commercial vehicles, increases were observed as well; a plus of
16.3% was denoted for lorries (36 123 units), the most important vehicle

(VW) again defended the top position with 65 150 registered new passenger
cars (share: 18.3%), followed by Opel with 25 919 vehicles (share: 7.3%),
Renault (incl. Dacia; share: 6.8%), Ford (share: 6.6%), Skoda (share: 5.7%),
Audi (share: 5.6%), BMW (incl. MINI; share: 5.1%), Hyundai (share: 5.1%),

On behalf of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment & Water Management as well as the Austrian Climate and Energy Fund and in accordance with the regulation (EC) No 443/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 April 2009 setting emission performance standards for new passenger cars, Statistics Austria evaluates the CO2-emissions of new registrated passenger cars compiled on basic data transferred by Austria’s association of insurance companies (VVO).
Provisional results 2011 showed that the average CO2-emissions of petrol and diesel driven passenger cars amounted to 138 g/km and 140 g/km. An analysis of the results since 2000 have been showing a trend to reduced-emission vehicles; in 2000 the above mentioned engine types averagely recorded 176 and 162 g/km, respectively.
