Inland waterway transport is widely regarded as an eco-friendly mode of transporting especially large volumes of freight. The inland waterway survey covers the transport performance of domestic and foreign vessels transporting freight on the Danube waterway, which links Austria with the European waterway network. Detailed statistical data is available to the interested public and the decision makers covering in particular the number of laden ships, the transport volume and the transport performance, separated to domestic and foreign ships as well as to types of transport (inland transport, international goods receipt and dispatch, transit).
A total of 9.9 million tonnes (t) of freight was transported on the Austrian section of the Danube in the survey
year 2011, a decrease of 1.1 million t
The international goods receipt was reduced by 10.3% to 5.6 million t compared to the previous year. International goods dispatch showed a decrease in transport volume of 7.3% to 1.5 million t. For transit a drop of 16.8% to 2.3 million t was determined. Only the tonnage in national transport rose by 23.8% to 0.6 million t in the reference year.
In 2011 waterside trans-shipments by all ports on the Austrian section of the Danube decreased by 6.2% to 8.2 million t. Thereof 93 856 t were excavations of gravel in the Danube basin. The ports of Linz handled 4.6 million t which was a drop by 12.3%. The result of the ports of Vienna reduced by 6.3% to 1.1 million t and in the port of Enns by 8.8% to 0.6 million t. In the port of Krems 0.4 million t were handled for the reference year which was a growth by 23.9%. For the remaining ports the waterside trans-shipments rose by 5.8% to 1.5 million t.
On the Austrian part of the Danube 14 accidents involving freight vessels were counted during the reference year 2011.
