In 2009, altogether €7.48 billion were spent in Austria on R&D in all sectors of performance. Hence, R&D expenditures increased by 8.9%, compared with reference year 2007. These are the results of STATISTICS AUSTRIA’s surveys about the reference year 2009 among all R&D performing institutions in all economic sectors. Of the approximately €7.48 billion spent on R&D in 2009, 68.1% were spent in the business enterprise sector, 26.1% in the higher education sector, 5.3% in the government sector, and 0.5% in the private non-profit sector.
The number of personnel engaged with R&D, which was also covered in the framework of the surveys on research and experimental development (R&D), was 56 437.5 full-time equivalents (FTEs). In comparison with the reference period 2007, this represents an increase of the number of R&D personnel by 6.0%.
56 437.5 full-time equivalents were dedicated for R&D in 2009, of which 67.9% were employed in the business enterprise sector, 26.7% in the higher education sector, 4.7% in the government sector and 0.7% in the private non-profit sector.
