The budgetary items of the federal state for R&D are summarised in the Annex T of the Federal Finances Act of the respective year which contains the payments of the federal state to international organisations with the aim of research and research promotion (part a), as well as the national federal expenditure for research and research promotion (federal research budget; part b).
The R&D relevant budgetary items of the Annex T (part a and part b) serve as a basis for the classification by socio-economic objectives for reporting to the EU and OECD and are analysed by applying the “GBAORD“ concept which refers primarily to the budgets of the central state or federal state.
In 2011 the federal state spends 2.4 billion Euros for research and research promotion. Contributions to international organisations aimed at research and research promotion amount to 97.8 million Euros.
The highest shares of the federal expenditure for research and research promotion in 2011 by socio-economic objectives can be found in the categories promotion of the general advancement of knowledge: 29.8%, promotion of industrial production and industry: 25.6%, and promotion of health: 21.6%.
