Total population at the beginning of the year/quarter
Long-term trend
In 1961, Austria had just over seven million inhabitants.
High population growth during the 1960s (+415 000 people) was followed
by a decade of population stagnation. Austria’s population in the
1970s grew by only 74 000 people. The 1980s in turn saw a stronger population
growth (+158 000 people). The population increase until the mid-1990s
can be attributed on the one hand to a surplus of births over deaths
and on the other hand to net-migration gains from abroad. Between 1991
and 2001 the number of inhabitants in Austria rose by 310 000 people.
At the beginning of the 21st century, the evolution of Austria’s population
was characterised in particular by international migration from abroad,
which led to a high population increase.
Current annual results
There were 8 443 018 people living in Austria on 1 January
2012 according to the final results of Statistics Austria, some 38 766
people (+0.46%) more than at the beginning of 2011. The population growth
was thus significantly higher than in the previous year (2010: +28 962
people resp. +0.35%). As in previous years the population growth could
be mainly attributed to gains from international migration, while birth
surpluses and statistical adjustments only made for little increases
of the population figure.
