The number of unemployed and employed persons extracted from the Labour Force Survey (LFS) complies with the ILO definition. According to ILO definitions unemployed persons are defined as persons who were without work during the reference week, were currently available for work and were either actively seeking work in the past four weeks or had already found a job to start within the next three months. The LFS informs also on persons who do not meet the ILO criteria for unemployment but who are willing to work and available for work within short notice (labour reserve).
The national definition for the number of unemployed persons and the unemployment rate published by the Austrian Public Employment Service (AMS) are based on the unemployed persons registered at AMS and the number of employees recorded by the Main Association of Austrian Social Insurance Institutions.
