The monthly issued publication presents the latest results from all areas of official statistics and provides important basic information on the economy and society in Austria. According to preliminary results, social expenditure in Austria totalled €130 bn in 2020. This represents 34.4% of the gross domestic product (GDP). Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the increase in social expenditure (+11.4%) has been much higher than recorded so far whereas the economic growth went dramatically down (‑5.1%).
In 2019, the entire Austrian tourism industry (including business trips) achieved direct and indirect value added effects due to tourism consumption expenditure (including business trips) of €29.7 bn. Tourism thus made a direct or indirect contribution to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of 7.5%. As the results of the currently available Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) for Austria further show, resident and non-resident guests spent €37.65 bn in 2019; in 2018 it was €35.60 bn.
