Self perceived health

Figures stated below refer to „Austrian health interview survey 2006/07“.

Three in four Austrians aged 15 and over (75.5%) are satisfied with their general health status, rating it as “very good” or “good”. Conversely, only 6% of the population describe their health as “poor” or “very poor”. Almost one person in five (18.5%) perceives his or her health as “fair”. The results once again show that women rate their health less positively than men, with 78% of men – but only 73% of women – describing their health as at least “good”. Thus, overall, differences between the sexes are not very marked and affect almost every age group. However, gender-specific differences increase considerably in later adulthood. Longer life expectancy for women (2006: 82.7 years; men: 77.3 years) evidently results in a greater degree of health problems in old age for women than for men of the same age.

Compared with the results for 1991 and 1999, a positive trend can be seen overall in terms of self-perceived health status. The proportion of the population who rate their health as very good or good increased from 71% in 1991 to 74% in 1999 and is currently at 76%. The proportion of those who felt their health was poor or very poor, on the other hand, remained almost unchanged (1991: 7%, 1999: 6%, 2006: 6%). However, it should be borne in mind that the number of people in Austria aged 75 and over has increased from around 520 000 to 650 000 since 1991 and that only the population living in private households was included in the Micro census health surveys in 1991 and 1999.
