Austrian foreign trade in 2011 (preliminary results)

Overview

According to preliminary results relating to Austrian foreign trade in the year 2011, imports rose by 15.0% to €130.76 bn and exports increased by 11.7% to €122.16 bn. This growth was underpinned by trade with the 26 partner countries of the EU (arrivals: +13.2% to €93.25 bn; dispatches: +10.4% to €85.20 bn) and by trade with non-EU countries (imports: +19.8% to €37.51 bn; exports: 14.7% to €36.97 bn). The balance of trade deficit of 2010, at €4.28 bn, rose to €8.59 bn in 2011.

Trade according to goods categories

An analysis of the growth in foreign trade according to goods categories revealed positive developmental trends for machinery and transport equipment, which, proportionally, remained Austria’s most important commodity according to the SITC Rev. 4 classification of goods. Compared with the reporting year 2010, imports of these goods increased by 12.3% to €41.51 bn, exports rose by 11.3% to €46.03 bn.

Increases were also registered for the manufactured goods product group, with imports up by 18.7% to €21.45 bn and exports up by 13.3% to €28.51 bn.

Trade with the EU-27

Overall, trade with the EU member states accounted for 71.3% of total imports (2010: 72.5%) and 69.7% of total exports (2010: 70.5%). In 2011 as a whole, arrivals of goods from the 26 EU partner countries rose by 13.2% to €93.25 bn. Dispatches of goods to these countries increased by 10.4% to €85.20 bn. Compared with the previous year, the deficit in trade with the EU rose from €5.20 bn to €8.05 bn.

The product group with the highest volume in trade, machinery and transport equipment, showed increases with respect to trading in both directions: arrivals: +12.2% to €31.68 bn; dispatches: +7.8% to 29.86 bn.

Trade with non-EU countries

The value of imports to non-EU countries increased by 19.8% to €37.51 bn; exports also rose, by 14.7% to €36.97 bn. The balance of trade with non-EU countries turned into a deficit of €0.55 bn.

In value terms, the most important commodities traded with non-EU countries were machinery and transport equipment (imports: +12.5% to €9.83 bn; exports: +18.3% to €16.17 bn). Trade with manufactured goods product group also showed increases, by 20.3% to €3.71 bn (imports) and by 14.1% to €7.64 bn (exports).
