In the academic year 2010/11 there were altogether
124.921 teachers (incl. teacher in maternity leave) in general and vocational schools in Austria. The number of teaching
staff depending on type of school and province roughly reflected the
distribution of student numbers. Approximately 60% of teachers were

education sector, i.e. from school years 1
Two-thirds of teachers in Austrian schools are women. In the primary school sector the proportion of women is around 91%. In contrast, the sex-ratio of teaching staff in vocational schools and colleges is almost balanced. However the proportion in different branches of the vocational sector varies greatly. For instance, the proportion of women in colleges for business vocations is approximately 79%, whereas the proportion in technical and commercial colleges is 26%.
There were 34.110 persons as academic staff at public universities in the 2010/11 academic year. Of these 2.232 were professors and 31.878 were other science and arts staff. The total proportion of women is 38%. It is worth noting that only 20% of professors are women.
