2010: Food fish from domestic aquaculture production slightly increased

The total production of aquaculture amounted to 3 101 tons in 2010, which is 1.7% more than 2009. A reported a slight plus of the production of food fish by 1.2% to 2 167 tons was reported; stocking fish increased by 2.8% to 934 tons.

In the main food fish categories brook trouts (+65.8% to 36 tons), catfish (+53.4% to 151 tons) and carps (+1.0% to 348 tons) showed an increase during rainbow trouts decreased slightly (-2.8% auf 1 211 tons).

Compared to 2009, the number of fish farms increased by 7.1% to 438 units.

Methodological information, definitions:

Within the survey on aquaculture production the annual production of edible and stocking fish is determined.

Respondents needed to specify the quantity that originated from their own aquaculture facility and was marketed in the reporting period, divided into edible and stocking fish, for the fish species and crabs listed under "Production quantity". All fish species that are native to Austria and have a relative economic significance were recorded. Fish bought in from other facilities, income from sea fishing and stocking fish produced for use in the respondent's own business were not included.
